Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an innovative orthodontic treatment that uses clear BPA-free plastic aligners to gently guide your teeth into corrected positions. Dr. Karimian uses Invisalign to correct a variety of dental imperfections, including gaps, crooked teeth, and alignment issues like overbites.

How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign treatment uses a series of custom-made dental aligners to guide your teeth through a series of small, incremental movements until they reach the correct position in your mouth. The aligners put pressure on your teeth like traditional metal braces, but instead of having appointments for your dentist or orthodontist to tighten your archwire, you change your aligners every two weeks.

What are the benefits of Invisalign?

Invisalign treatment offers many benefits. The primary benefit is that you can remove your aligners to eat and clean your teeth. This means you can eat what you want and can brush and floss your teeth normally throughout treatment. You need to wear the aligners for 22-23 hours each day for maximum effectiveness.

Invisalign aligners are also nearly invisible when you wear them. They straighten your teeth without putting you through years of suffering from a mouth full of metal. Unless someone looks closely, they’ll never know you’re having orthodontic treatment.

What should I expect during Invisalign treatment?

During your initial Invisalign consultation, Dr. Karimian carefully examines your teeth to ensure Invisalign is the best treatment to correct your smile. He takes digital images and a mold of your teeth, which are used to both plan the migration of your teeth and to manufacture your series of custom aligners.

Throughout your treatment, you wear each set of aligners for two weeks. For the first two months, you have appointments every two weeks for Dr. Karimian to check your teeth and see they are moving as planned. Then for the rest of your treatment, you’ll have appointments every six weeks or so and will change your aligners at home. Invisalign treatment usually lasts between 9-18 months.

When your treatment is complete, you’ll wear your last set of aligners all the time as a retainer for six months while your teeth settle into their new positions. Then you’ll only wear your retainer while you sleep to keep your teeth in place.
