One-Day Crowns Q & A

Why do I need a crown?

Crowns serve many purposes, from cosmetic to functional. They’re designed to cover existing teeth and help keep your bite in its normal alignment. You might need a crown to protect a tooth that had a root canal or a large amount of decay removed. Crowns can also cover teeth that have cracks, chips, or fractures.

In addition to preserving your tooth’s root, the purpose of a crown is to minimize shifting. Your crown is designed to match your natural tooth when it was in its healthiest form. Not only does it match the shade of your surrounding teeth, it also allows you to bite and chew normally.

What is a one-day crown?

Traditional crowns required you to come in for several visits. After preparing your tooth and placing a temporary crown, your dentist sent out an impression. You had to wait up to several weeks for your new crown to arrive. Then you could have it permanently bonded in another visit.

The newer one-day crown procedure wraps up all of these steps in just a few hours. Dr. Karimian preps your tooth by removing decay or performing a root canal, if needed. He then files down your tooth and creates a “stump,” which acts as an anchor for your crown.

After getting an impression of your prepped tooth, Dr. Karimian inputs your information and impression into the CEREC system. This revolutionary device uses CAD/CAM digital imaging technology to map out your bite to create a perfectly fitting custom crown right in the office.

The CEREC system generally takes less than an hour to create your new tooth, and when it’s done, Dr. Karimian immediately bonds it to your prepped tooth. You leave the office with your permanent crown, rather than a temporary.

How long does a one-day crown last?

One-day crowns with CEREC last just as long as traditional crowns made in a lab. With good oral hygiene, including regular dental cleanings and daily brushing and flossing, your one-day CEREC crown can last a lifetime.

If your crown ever does fall off, keep it in a safe place until you can get in to see Dr. Karimian. As long as your crown isn’t broken or cracked, you can usually simply have it re-bonded.
